A reference guide to astrological concepts
Astrology is a symbolic language that maps cycles, patterns, and archetypes onto human experience. A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and location of birth.
A chart is not viewed as fixed destiny — it is a symbolic framework describing tendencies, potentials, psychological dynamics, and recurring life lessons.

Signs — how that energy expresses
Houses — where that energy manifests in life
Aspects — how different energies interact
Transits — how current planetary movement activates the chart over time

Two planets merge together. Intensifies energy, creates fusion. Can amplify strengths or overwhelm balance.
Supportive opportunity aspect. Cooperation, ease with effort, productive growth.

Natural harmony and flow. Ease, talent, stabilised energy.
Polarisation between opposing forces. Mirroring, projection, externalised tension, need for integration.

Subtle awareness between planets.
Mild friction or irritation.
Pressure-building tension.
A retrograde occurs when a planet appears to move backwards from Earth's perspective. Associated with reflection, revision, delays, reassessment, and internalisation of energy.
Occurs several times per year. Associated with communication, travel, technology, contracts, and mental processing.
Miscommunication, delays, reconnecting with the past, revisiting unfinished issues, technical problems, re-evaluation.

Transits are the ongoing movements of planets through the sky and how they interact with a natal chart over time. When a moving planet forms an aspect to a natal placement, it activates the themes associated with that placement.
Saturn transits — responsibility, endings, restructuring, maturation.
Jupiter transits — opportunity, growth, travel, expansion.
Pluto transits — profound psychological transformation.
Uranus transits — disruption, liberation, sudden change.
Synastry compares two birth charts to understand relational dynamics and energetic interaction. Astrologers overlay one chart onto another to examine planetary aspects, house overlays, emotional compatibility, attraction patterns, and long-term growth dynamics.
Sun connections — shared identity, recognition, mutual understanding.
Moon connections — emotional safety, attachment, instinctive bonding.
Venus–Mars connections — chemistry, attraction, romantic and sexual dynamics.
Saturn connections — commitment, longevity, responsibility, karmic lessons.
Pluto connections — intensity, transformation, obsession, psychological depth.
House overlays — show where one person activates specific life areas in another's chart.
Synastry is less about “perfect compatibility” and more about understanding what a relationship activates, what lessons emerge, and where ease and challenge exist.
A composite chart combines two charts into a single symbolic chart representing the relationship itself as its own entity. It describes the purpose of the relationship, shared themes, emotional tone, and long-term dynamics.
Composite Sun — core identity of the relationship.
Composite Moon — emotional climate.
Composite Venus — affection style.
Composite Saturn — durability and responsibility.
Midpoint Composite calculates the mathematical midpoint between each pair of planets in two charts. It produces a theoretical chart representing the relationship as a shared symbolic space. It is the most widely used method in modern Western astrology.
Davidson Relationship Chart is calculated differently — using the midpoint date and time between the two births, and the geographic midpoint between their birth locations. This produces an actual chart for a real moment in time and a real place, which some astrologers consider more grounded and predictive. The Davidson is particularly useful for timing relationship events via transits.
Both methods reveal different facets of the same relationship. Midpoint charts describe its psychological and symbolic nature. Davidson charts describe its real-world manifestation and timing.
A Saturn Return occurs when Saturn returns to the exact position it occupied at birth. Happens approximately at ages 27–30, 56–59, and 84–88.
Maturation, accountability, reality checks, identity restructuring, long-term decisions, career and relationship shifts. Dismantles unstable structures while strengthening what is authentic and sustainable.
The first Saturn Return is commonly associated with the transition into full adulthood.
Eclipses occur when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align near the lunar nodes. Interpreted as turning points, accelerated timelines, endings and beginnings, revelations, and course corrections.
Associated with beginnings, new directions, external change, and opportunities.
Associated with endings, emotional revelations, completion, and release.
Year 0 — Awakening. A new theme or relationship enters life.
Year 4–5 — Crisis / Adjustment. The implications become clearer.
Year 9 — Turning Point. A major decision or shift occurs.
Year 13–14 — Integration. The new reality stabilises.
Year 18 — Completion. The cycle resolves or closes.
The solstices and equinoxes mark seasonal turning points and are foundational to the zodiac system.
Longest and shortest days of the year. Associated with Cancer and Capricorn seasons. Symbolise peak light and peak darkness.
Equal day and night. Associated with Aries and Libra seasons. Symbolise balance and transition.
Many astrologers interpret these as energetic gateways marking collective seasonal shifts.
Each zodiac sign is associated with a ruling planet that governs its style of expression.

|---|---|
| Aries | Mars |
| Taurus | Venus |
| Gemini | Mercury |
| Cancer | Moon |
| Leo | Sun |
| Virgo | Mercury |
| Libra | Venus |
| Scorpio | Pluto / Mars |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | Saturn |
| Aquarius | Uranus / Saturn |
| Pisces | Neptune / Jupiter |
The Rising Sign (Ascendant) is the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It represents first impressions, outer personality, behavioural style, physical presence, instinctive responses, and the way a person navigates the world.
While the Sun sign reflects identity and the Moon reflects emotional needs, the Rising Sign shapes how others initially perceive someone. The Ascendant also determines the entire house structure of the chart, making it one of the most important placements in astrology.
